Mainland Visiting Scholars Scheme
Centre for Medical Ethics and Law (CMEL), University of Hong Kong
Purpose of Scheme
1. The Visiting Scholars Scheme enables academic and professional staff from Mainland China to be invited to share expertise and professional experiences in key areas identified as important by the Centre for Medical Ethics and Law (CMEL) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU). This scheme also enables CMEL’s faculty to develop and nurture academic ties and collaboration with scholars from Mainland China.
2. Visiting appointments will be selective as such appointments to visit HKU should be seen as recognition of the appointee’s status and professional standing, and should contribute to CMEL’s academic and research profile. Visiting appointments may include key members of the Visiting Scholar’s research team or professional organization.
3. Visiting scholars (and, where applicable, any member of their research team or professional organization) will engage in research or teaching activities with CMEL’s faculty, including:
- 3.1 Participation in academic meetings;
- 3.2 Expert consultation on research topics that are of concern or interest to Mainland scholars and CMEL’s faculty;
- 3.3 Involvement in specific research projects;
- 3.4 Contribution to teaching or knowledge exchange; or
- 3.5 Collaboration in writing up an academic paper for publication in a peer review journal or grant application.
4. Where applicable, Visiting Scholars (and, where applicable, members of their research team or professional organization) may present their work in Mandarin, and CMEL’s Directors have the discretion to provide translation services as appropriate to the context and/or need.
5. Additionally, this Scheme enables CMEL faculty to visit academic institutions in Mainland China in order to enable CMEL to develop and nurture academic ties and collaboration with scholars from the Mainland.
6. Visiting CMEL faculty may engage in the research or teaching activities as enumerated in paragraph 3 above with their counterparts in Mainland China.
Funding
7. CMEL may provide Visiting Scholars (including key members of their research team or professional organization) with the following:
- 7.1 A return economy class airfare from a city in Mainland China to Hong Kong via the most direct route, or an equivalent mode of transportation;
- 7.2 Accommodation at a hotel for a duration of up to 5 days, or such duration as CMEL’s Directors consider appropriate; and
- 7.3 Payment of honorarium based on the prevailing HKU policy.
8. CMEL may provide Visiting CMEL faculty with the following:
- 8.1 A return economy class airfare from Hong Kong to a city in Mainland China via the most direct route, or an equivalent mode of transportation;
- 8.2 Accommodation at a hotel for a duration of up to 5 days, or such duration as CMEL’s Directors consider appropriate; and
- 8.3 Reimbursement for ground transport and official entertainment expenses in accordance with the prevailing HKU policy
Appointment Procedure
9. A Visiting Scholar must have been recommended by a CMEL faculty member, and must submit her/his personal particulars as specified by CMEL and her/his detailed CV and publications list.
