Abstract:
The advent of readily and cheaply available genetic testing and genomic sequencing technologies open up many new avenues of possibilities in the fields of preventive populational screening, diagnostic and predictive genetic testing and whole genomic sequencing aimed at the improvement of public health, the clinical management of individuals with genetic vulnerabilities, as well as for the eventual routine implementation of precision medicine.  Ethical and legal discourse, however, has tended to lag between technology: this talk explores some of the consequent controversies that has arisen in relation to the application of genetic testing and genomic sequencing procedures, particularly for children.  The implications of relational information gleaned from genetic and genomic data of individuals for the right to privacy and the obligation of confidentiality will be considered, as well as the role of counselling and appropriate education in the taking of consent and in the interpretation of results for lay patients.
