James has dual qualification in medical and legal fields.  He is a medical graduate of HKU and a Specialist in General Surgery. He also possesses LLB (Hons) degree from the University of London. James has been active in both the medical and the legal circles for many years. His research areas include medicolegal, expert witnesses, healthcare law, healthcare ethics, apologies, apology legislation, negotiation and mediation.

James is also interested in disciplinary proceedings and regulators. In this field, he is a Medical Assessor and a member of a Preliminary Investigation Committee of the Medical Council of HK, a member of the Barristers Disciplinary Tribunal Panel and of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal Panel.

James has published extensively in journals in Hong Kong and abroad as well as book chapters on his research areas.  He has chaired or spoken in over 100 local or international meetings/conferences to medical and legal practitioners and students.
